A Safety Assessment is the process of identifying hazards in an environment, analyzing the risks associated with it, and determining proper ways to eliminate, control, or prevent situations or occurrences that are detrimental to the people within the environment. In the workplace setting, safety assessments or risk assessments allow employers to conduct a thorough inspection of the workplace to identify the varying situations or processes that could inflict harm on people.

Safety Assessments are important because they form an integral part of a good and effective occupational health and safety management plan. Safety Evaluations allow employers to create awareness of the different areas of work or situations in the workplace that are hazardous and could cause injury among employees.

A Safety Assessment is conducted by doing thorough workplace inspections and by interviewing staff or employees of any hazards they feel should be a concern to the company. Safety Assessments should be done with the presence of safety representatives – workers who are elected or selected for the role to represent the health and safety interests of workers within their work group for a person conducting a business or undertaking.

To be sure that all hazards are found, look at all aspects of the work, include non-routine activities in the evaluation, include people who work off site, observe the way the the work is organized or implemented, and include an assessment of workers depending on level, age, persons with disabilities, or expectant mothers.

Consistent Checks

Safety assessments have to be done routinely in order to be always updated of the hazards that surround people in the workplace. This enables employers to benchmark their standards and areas for improvement.

Determine the Target at Risk

After determining the potential cause of harm in the workplace, the next concern would be to determine the people who are directly affected by it. Begin with your full-time and part-time employees and evaluate to whom these risk factors will affect.

Determine the Risk Level

For every potential hazard, employers have to be able to determine the level of hazard it brings forth in order for them to set priorities. The degree of risk can be categorized into low, medium, or high level. High-level risks should be acted upon immediately to avoid causing harm on staff workers.

Ranking or prioritizing the level of hazard is usually established by taking into consideration the amount of exposure an employee has for accidents or injuries, the frequency of the exposure, and the probability of the occurrence.
